7 Unique Things To Do in Pico Island, Azores

things to do in pico azores wine museum vineyards currais

TL;DR: Pico island packs three world-class experiences into one small volcanic rock: Portugal’s highest mountain, a UNESCO-listed wine landscape, and some of the best whale watching on the planet. Add a lava tube, hiking trails, natural pools, and a sunset bar with a jaw-dropping view over Faial, and you have an island that keeps outperforming expectations.

📌 Quick tips for Pico

✈️ Getting there: Fly via SATA/Azores Airlines or TAP Portugal, or take the Atlântico Line ferry from Faial (30 min) or São Jorge (1 hour)
🚗 Getting around: Rent a car at Pico Airport (public transport is unreliable)
📅 Best time to visit: May to October; April–May is best for whale diversity
🐳 Whale watching: Book Espaço Talassa well in advance in summer

7 Experiences You Can Only Have in Pico

Pico is the second largest island of the Azores archipelago, just behind São Miguel. Despite being the most obviously volcanic, it boasts an incredible variety of landscapes: green meadows, lava fields, a UNESCO-listed wine coast, and postcard views over the neighbouring islands. There is a lot to wonder about in Pico island.

Here are 7 of the best experiences you should try to have in Pico. Even if you manage only half of these, you will not be disappointed.

In this article:

1A special kind of wine

Boardwalk over the vineyards @ Museu do Vinho (Wine Museum).

The volcanic, basalt-heavy soil dominates Pico‘s landscape so thoroughly that the island earned the nickname “the grey island.” And yet, wine production here dates back to the 15th century, when Portuguese settlers first planted vines in the fissures of the lava rock. In 2004, the vineyard landscape was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is a breathtaking man-made landscape of stone walls (currais) laid out in a grid formation running inland from, and parallel to, the rocky shore. This uniquely organized pattern was designed to protect the Verdelho grapes from harsh Atlantic winds and seawater spray. The combination of volcanic soil and ocean influence gives the wine a distinctive, briny depth that you will not find anywhere else in Portugal.

Museu do Vinho (Wine Museum), housed in a former Carmelite convent in Madalena, and the nearby Cooperativa Vitivinícola do Pico are the two best starting points. Both organize tours and tastings of the main Pico wine labels. My personal favourite: Terras de Lava, rosé version.

2Go Underground at Gruta das Torres

Gruta das Torres is the longest lava tube in Portugal, stretching 5,150 metres in total. It was formed around 1,500 years ago during an eruption at Cabeço Bravo, on the lower western flanks of Mount Pico. The cave reaches heights of up to 15 metres in places, and the main navigable tunnel alone runs for 4,480 metres. That said, visitors explore around 450 metres of it on a guided tour, which takes roughly 90 minutes.

Everyone I talked to praised the visit, and they were not exactly geology enthusiasts. Sadly, we did not plan ahead and could not get tickets even with two days’ notice. In summer, book well ahead and bring shoes with good grip. You will see lava in all kinds of formations: stalagmites and stalactites, ridged walls, lava balls, and the impressive ropy lava fields that look like frozen rivers of basalt.

3Climb the highest peak in Portugal

It is impossible to overlook Mount Pico while you are on the island. Standing at 2,351 metres, it is the highest peak in Portugal and the third highest in the entire Atlantic Ocean. Climbing Pico is deceptively hard and takes between 6 and 9 hours depending on your fitness level.

All climbers check in at Casa da Montanha (at 1,200m altitude), where you receive a GPS tracker for safety. The ever-changing weather and all kinds of jagged lava rock formations create a very tricky terrain. A guide is technically optional, but highly recommended. Around a third of climbers do not make it to the top, often because of weather turning mid-climb.

4Explore the island on foot

It is not all about trekking Mount Pico. There are easier and flatter options that still deliver spectacular scenery. Hiking is one of the best things you can do in the Azores, and Pico has a solid official network of trails spread across the island.

I suggest the trail starting near Lagoa do Capitão (Capitão’s Lake), with stunning views over Mount Pico. The contrast between the dark grey basalt and the azure blue sea is something you will not forget easily. Check the official Azores Trails listing for Pico for maps, difficulty ratings, and starting points before you go.

5Get to know more about whales

A tribute to whale hunters, common in Pico’s recent past.

Talking about Pico means talking about whales. Museu dos Baleeiros (Whalers’ Museum) in Lajes do Pico holds an entire exhibit on the island’s whaling tradition, complete with artefacts, machinery, and a short documentary that gives a vivid window into a whaler’s daily life. The museum is both fascinating and sobering. The bravery of people who chased sperm whales from tiny rowing boats is hard to fully comprehend.

Whale hunting has been prohibited since 1986, replaced today by something far more rewarding: whale-watching. If you visit between April and October, your chances of sightings increase significantly. Pico sits closer to the main sperm whale migration routes than any other island in the Azores, making it arguably one of the top whale-watching destinations in the world. You can also do whale-watching in São Miguel, but Pico has a clear edge.

My recommended company for whale-watching in Pico is Espaço Talassa, based in Lajes do Pico since 1989. They are widely regarded as the best operator on the island, with small boats of up to 12 passengers and an approach focused on ethical, research-backed observation.

6Swim in the wild Atlantic

Sandy beaches are not Pico’s strong suit, but that does not mean you cannot go for a swim in the clear North Atlantic waters. All across the island you will find natural lava pools, some with beautiful views over the neighbouring islands of Faial and São Jorge. Piscina Municipal da Madalena is a great example: a large saltwater pool plus several small bays perfectly safe for an ocean swim. Entrance is free.

7Go for drinks with a view

In 2016, CELLA BAR won one of the prestigious ArchDaily Building of The Year awards. It catapulted the place into international spotlight, but the team has kept its reputation built on honest Azorean food and an unbeatable position.

The view over Faial island is what makes it a singular experience. That, and their chocolate mousse, which is divine. We came for sunset drinks and ended up staying for dinner. The sopa de peixe (fish soup) and lapas (limpets) are both excellent. The perfect way to end your last night in Pico.

Where to Stay in Pico Island

For most visitors, Madalena or São Roque do Pico make the most practical bases: both have a good range of restaurants, quick ferry connections to Faial and São Jorge, and easy access to the main sights. If you want something more special, a remote rural property will make your stay far more memorable. The starred sky at night in the countryside here is worth the extra logistics alone.

Frequently Asked Questions about Things to Do in Pico Island

What are the best things to do in Pico island, Azores?

The three unmissable experiences in Pico are climbing Mount Pico (at 2,351m, Portugal's highest peak), wine tasting in the UNESCO-listed vineyard landscape, and whale watching with a certified operator like Espaço Talassa. Beyond this trio, Gruta das Torres lava cave, hiking trails near Lagoa do Capitão, the natural pools at Madalena, and sunset drinks at CELLA BAR round out a well-spent visit.

How many days do you need in Pico island?

Allow at least 3 full days in Pico. One day for climbing Mount Pico (it takes 6 to 9 hours round trip), one day for wine, the cave, and the coast, and one day for whale watching and the natural pools. If you plan to day-trip to Faial or São Jorge by ferry, add a day for each.

What is Gruta das Torres and is it worth visiting?

Gruta das Torres is Portugal's longest lava tube, at 5,150 metres in total length. It formed around 1,500 years ago from an eruption at Cabeço Bravo, and visitors can explore around 450 metres of it on a 90-minute guided tour. It is absolutely worth visiting, especially on a rainy day. Book in advance during summer as spots fill up fast.

What is the best whale watching company in Pico island?

Espaço Talassa, based in Lajes do Pico, is widely considered the best whale watching operator in the Azores. They have been running tours since 1989, use small boats of up to 12 passengers, and follow strict ethical protocols. Book well ahead in July and August. The best months for variety of species are April to May.

Is the Pico island vineyard really a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Yes. The Landscape of the Pico Island Vineyard Culture was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. The 987-hectare site encompasses the extraordinary system of stone-walled plots (currais) that protect Verdelho grapevines from Atlantic winds, a tradition dating back to the 15th century. The vineyards near Criação Velha and Santa Luzia are the most photogenic areas to visit.

Pico Island: Small Island, Big Experiences

Pico tends to surprise people. On paper it looks like the mountain island with the dark landscape. In practice, it is an island where you climb Portugal’s highest peak in the morning, drink wine grown between lava rocks in the afternoon, and watch sperm whales the next day as if that were a completely normal thing to do on a Tuesday. It is the kind of place that makes you quietly rearrange your assumptions about what a small volcanic island can actually contain.
